Have you heard that in February 2012 Google made big changes to its search algorithim? This update has been called the Panda Update by Google and specialists in the field of SEO.

This caused many websites to drop in their rankings for many of their core keyword phrases. It is very important to know, in the light of this update, what you should do. Here is a list of factors that affect rankings and additionally some tips on what you should do with your website:

Geo location signals

Content: geo targeted ie include Perth in content etc

IP addresses of hosting company now thought to be included as a minor factor

Mentions (third party citations) of website on other websites (not links)  : for sematic indexing

Social signals: particularly Google Circles, Google Plus 1

Panda algorithim key factor : Usage Metric now being considered through testing as “the #1 Metric”

Click through rate % from organic results (control meta description tags to improve)

Google measures average click through rates for each ranking position in each niche

Below average for each ranking position / above average score for each are monitored

Bounce rate / seconds spent on site ie  80% leave in 10 secs: Google monitors average for each ranking position and determines above + below average

% of returning users

Average time on site

Check your Google Analytics Account for your own metrics and possible issues.

More on Panda Update 3.3 (Freshness Update):

Spam on page content: unprofessional writing

Duplicate content: even snippets of text are counted as duplicate content  ie product page snippets need to be more than 60% unique and 250 words long minimum

Written text : if no other Panda issues involved can still be flagged

Truncated page rank: 60% from top level of domain and not deep links

Linking: Over Optimisation Linking and Spam Linking

Three tactics to avoid upcoming link spam filters

1)      Rotating partial match anchor text

Previously exact match anchor text : “x y z”

Eg “Yellow Widgets Sydney” was standard with multiples of targeted exact match variations)

Now use:  x, xy,xz,zx,y,yz,z,etc

Eg “Widgets Yellow, Widgets Sydney, Sydney Widgets, Sydney,Widgets,Yellow, Sydney Yellow Widgets” etc

PLUS generic natural anchor text “click here”, “best site for x y z,” + other calls for action ie “get your x y z here”

Do not use same phrase as anchor text as more than 30% other than “Brand”, “website.com.au” but even avoid this if possible

Best links ratio:

40% homepage links

60% deep page links

2)      Avoid Link Spikes : massive amounts of new links (maybe ok if no other issue flagged) but  AVOID anyway

Can be penalised if other issues flagged but may not be issue if no other flag

Response is to Drip links:

No more links than unique visitors ie pages times unique visitors per month ie 10 pages visited on website * 30 uniques per month =  300 links max per month ie 10 per day

Action: we are now slowing drip feeding to no more than circa 800 links per website MAX

3)      Panda Links Spam (Son Of Panda) coming soon

Spam Links Filter: next Google move predicted from patents “Removing spam links from backlink profile by Google as #1 target for 2012”

To avoid backlinks being removed: create grade A reading level as context for links (spinning content to be checking at 60% unique) {of content of page from which links come}

Tests show Spam Flag Links can flag main site (check PR vs Moz Rank, Moz Rank more accurate, if high deviance can indicate new flag)

Simple search for basic penalties

a)      Does the site rank #1 for URL and or business name

b)      Check “full title” & see where you show up (if not in top 50 with quotations then big problems)

c)       Check Google Webmaster Tools for warning emails

d)      Shaking off penalty possible but difficult to get rid of

comprehensiveness of public profile pages in our index from more than two-hundred

social sites.

High-quality sites algorithm data update and freshness improvements. [launch codename

"mm", project codename "Panda"] Like many of the changes we make, aspects of our high-

quality sites algorithm depend on processing that’s done offline and pushed on a periodic cycle.

In the past month, we’ve pushed updated data for “Panda,”  We’ve also made improvements to

keep our database fresher overall.

Tweaks to handling of anchor text. [launch codename "PC"] This month we turned off a

classifier related to anchor text (the visible text appearing in links). Our experimental data

suggested that other methods of anchor processing had greater success, so turning off this

component made our scoring cleaner and more robust.
